What Can Occupational Therapists Do?
Research shows that after only six weeks of sickness absence, a person’s ability to return to work falls away rapidly. Almost one in five people who reach this point will stay off work sick and eventually leave paid employment.
Occupational Therapists Can:
Prepare people for the world of work by providing a detailed assessment of individuals capacity and the workplace requirements.
Job retention for those in work by teaching the person to manage any ongoing condition and symptoms such as pain and fatigue.
Providing rehabilitation through agreed goals with the employee and employer in a timely manner.
Advise on reasonable adjustments in the workplace.
Occupational therapists can also deliver staff wellbeing interventions and can support organisations to improve staff satisfaction and sickness absence levels.
Assessment of functional capacity:
If you are already employed, the assessment will be job specific and will be completed to inform towards the most appropriate work-related duties and adjustments. If you are unemployed, the assessment will be generic and will identify which roles will suit your current physical capacity. These interventions will be regularly reviewed and reassessed.
Communication between the yourself and employee:
This can be face-to-face during workplace assessments or written correspondence. Typically, this will be providing advice on reasonable adjustments, phased returns and condition management.
Exercise and Work Simulation:
You can participate in a structured program that combines physical exercises with work simulation activities. The goal is to improve your functional abilities and prepare you for specific job tasks.
Workplace assessments:
These are undertaken if work-related tasks and/or face-to-face contact with the employer is required. Workplace assessments also identify environmental barriers in returning to work.
Reassessment:
Throughout the rehabilitation process, you will regularly be reassessed to monitor your progress and adjust the program as needed.
Long-term Strategies:
Self-management strategies are explored to help you to maintain your functional abilities. This may include access to local facilities and community groups, and also on how you can increase your own activity levels in day-to-day living.
This process aims to help individuals return to work safely and effectively, enhancing your overall health and wellbeing.
